Just a little post about a great way to make money on top of anything you buy online. It’s called Quidco and it offers cashback on loads of popular, and some unknown online stores and services. Quidco charge you £5 per year for the account (as long as you earn £5 or over) and once the money is received you can get it paid in to a bank or paypal account.

Popular shops such as play.com, game.co.uk, apple, itunes, HMV and many more are all available, and over the past year i’ve managed to rack up several hundred pounds worth of cashback in just under a year! Some mobile phone contracts offer up to £150 cashback, and you could also gain cashback on any holidays, insurances or even those important apple purchases!

There are a few other cashback sites however, i’ve found Quidco the best and usually provides better cashback rates. It’s simple to use, and to gain cash back all you have to do is log in and find the store or service you want. Click their link and buy away!

So get yourself signed up and start making money back on what you buy already!

As a teenager i was extremely interested in aviation, specifically military planes. I used to spend my spare hours building Airfix 1:72 scale models, and in fact still have some of them about the house now! However my favorite plane out of the many greats, was the Avro Vulcan.

As the last Vulcan to fly was in 1993, making me only 6, i have no living memory of seeing a Vulcan fly. However i have been told by many that it is a ‘once saw never forgotten’ experience. I did however in 2001 go down to Bruntingthorpe to see a taxi run in the stages of getting her back in the sky. It was a great sight and sound seeing her taxi down the runway.

A large hanger on Bruntingthorpe airfield is where the loving restoration of the last Vulcan to fly has taken place over the past 15 years. It’s hard to comprehend the amount of work which is involved in completely rebuilding a machine like this, let alone the cost. The aircraft was completely overhauled, and was pretty much rebuilt from scratch. Miles of cables and wires were replaced, many of the parts were sent back to their manufacturer for a refurbishment and repair or replaced including the eight Rolls Royce Engines.

Over £6.5 has been spent on the project, which has mainly come from donations from aircraft enthusiasts desperate to see the delta back in the sky. A large National Lottery also played a big part in keeping funds available. TVOC is the company behind the restoration.

However with an amazing amount of hard work from staff & volunteers across the years on the Vulcan paid off this year as the Vulcan made it’s magnificent Rolls Royce engines were heard once again over the British Isles.

Despite the Vulcan being in RAF service for 30 years, it only once saw combat in the defence of the Falkland Islands. In special missions named ‘Black Buck’ the Bombers carried out attacks on Port Stanley, driving out the Argentine forces across 5 missions. These missions were the longest range air attacks in history, helped by in air refueling by Victor Aircraft’s.

When the Vulcans were taken out of service in the early 90’s many of them were scrapped. However some were sold to aircraft museums across the UK, and a number overseas. Most now, unfortunately have saw better days, and many sit outside exposed to the elements. This is why it is so great to see one of the RAF’s most amazing planes back in the sky!

It has been featuring in many airshows across the country this year, and it is hoped that this will continue in 2009. Long live the XH558!

After recently having to send my MacBook Pro off for the second time for a logic board issue, it came back with it’s third logic board in a year! (Not great Apple!) After this, upon trying to create a updated back up with Time Machine, it wouldn’t continue with the older backups and was trying to create a new one. After a quick google search i found a couple of good pages of advice and possible fix.

The reason for Time Machine’s behavior is due to a new mac address provided with the new logic board. Time machine links backups with the ID of the machine - the mac address. These guides helped me along to a certain point, however some parts i had to figure out myself. Therefore if your having the same problem, just follow the following steps.

Open System Profiler and choose ‘Network’. Then in the main window choose ‘Ethernet’. In the information window you will then see you NEW logic board mac address in here. Write this down. Just for example i will use 00:1a:01:01:01:01.

Turn Time Machine off, by going to Time Machine Preferences in System Preferences.

Open Terminal

Enter the following code and press Enter. Now depending on your name of the TM drive you may need to change this, and also add any folders of sub folders to where the actual backups are stored. Note, if there are spaces in the name, after each word put a back slash \.

cd /Volumes/Time\ Machine\/Backups.backupdb

Next enter the following and press Enter. Depending on the name of the mac which is getting backed up, you need to put the name in speech marks.

xattr -p com.apple.backupd.BackupMachineAddress "Adam's MacBook Pro"

Now enter the following two lines to get your OLD mac address of your TM Backups.

cd ..
ls -al

This will display a number of things on screen. You should see a sequence of numbers after a ‘.’ such as ‘001b02020202′. This is your OLD mac address. Write this down!

Next, input the following and press Enter. Remember change the following to match the root of your backups and TM named drive.

sudo fsaclctl -p /Volumes/Time\ Machine\/ -d

You will be asked to enter your password. NOTE: You will NOT actually see your password or any characters when doing this. Make sure its correct and press Enter.

Now you need to enter the following line, making sure that your OLD mac address is first, followed by your NEW mac address. Use a period at the front of each, and do not include and colons.

sudo mv .001b02020202 .001a01010101

Now enter the following and replacing the mac address with your OLD address. Also change the name of the folder (likely to be the name of your mac). Include colons this time as shown and press enter.

sudo xattr -w com.apple.backupd.BackupMachineAddress 00:1b:02:02:02:02 Backups.backupdb/"Adam's MacBook Pro"

Finally enter the following to complete the process. Again check and change your directory names and paths if needed.

sudo fsaclctl -p /Volumes/Time\ Machine\/ -e

Now you should be able to turn TM back on, and start from where your backups last stopped! It is quite a complex process, especially to myself who had not used terminal and it’s commands too much before. If you are getting errors, please post a comment and i will be happy to try and help you.

Also see the following two websites for information about the process. MacOSxHints & Apple Support. Both pages helped towards fixing my TM in some ways, after figuring out the changes which i needed to make myself.
